In Chinua Achebe's essay "Nigeria's Promise, Africa's Hope", he expresses his thoughts about the Nigeria of the past and the present. He compares these two time period in order to find a solution the the corrupted and uncontrolled environment of Nigeria today. I believe the message or big idea Chinua Achebe is pass on through this essay is that in order to unite and purify Nigeria, we need to first get rid of the corrupted leaders ,and understand the concept of freedom, which people of Nigeria are not used to. He made these point fairly clear throughout his essay and the following are notable ones. (1)Chinua says, "First, we will have to find a way to do away with the present system of political godfatherism." This is in the eleventh paragraph what what Achebe is trying to say is that the first priority is to get rid of the corrupted government to move forward.
(2)In the third paragraph, he says , "If you take someone who has not really been in charge of himself for 300 years and tell him, “O.K., you are now free,” he will not know where to begin. This proverb's message is that "When something new is given to someone, who has no knowledge of what to do with it, they will not understand the purpose of it. (3)He also back this up by saying in the forth paragraph, "Africa’s postcolonial disposition is the result of a people who have lost the habit of ruling themselves, forgotten their traditional way of thinking, embracing and engaging the world without sufficient preparation." The people were not prepared for freedom because they had no idea of what it had actually meant. They had lost their previous ideas and life choices made by their ancestors. image source: http://www.african.cam.ac.uk/images/pages/achebe2.jpg Nigeria1.The police of Nigeria had gained a reputation "as hopelessly corrupted", A 1994 report said, "Most people just join he police to make money". 2.Nigeria is known to carry to largest diversity of butterflies. 3.
